Uhtred is determined to use the Saxons to his personal advantage, but Brida is adamant in her refusal of the Saxon way. Sihtric breaks Skade free of her chains and takes her to meet Uhtred at the tree with Finan and Osfeth. He presumes that the plan is to make Æthelwold the next king of Wessex. Æthelflæd claims that Danes are near and it was Hæsten who attacked her. Æthelflæd and Ælswith watch from above. Aelswith unwittingly seals her own fate when she tells Aethelhelm that there is a plant in the courtyard, the flowers of which when dissolved in water are tasteless and poisonous. As promised, they release him. While he’s gone, Eadith frees Sihtric and Pyrlig. Uhtred reluctantly agrees despite getting baptized by Father Beocca twice before. While Uhtred fights Cnut, Brida hears of his betrayal of Ragnar. Uhtred urges Edward to accept his offer, but he instead agrees with Lord Æthelhelm and refuses to lend Uhtred his men. The Last Kingdom is a British historical fiction television series based on Bernard Cornwell's The Saxon Stories series of novels. She discovers the whelps on his back as she cleans him. Eardwulf flees. And so they come to an agreement. Uhtred and Beocca share a jug of ale as tomorrow, Beocca will be returning to Winchester. Uhtred leads the negotiation with Erik and Sigefrid. Uhtred then leaves to find Stiorra. There are times where he must be ruthless, but he isn’t, and now Sigefrid and Erik think him to be weak. And now he’s questioning if God wants him to do this.
And for that, she will always have his protection. And so, Uhtred leaves, with Finan not far behind, though he tells Finan to fall back. The Last Kingdom is the first historical novel in The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, published in 2004. They will leave as soon as Uhtred’s horse is cooler and fed. Guthrum then orders his men to get rid of the English hostages. Brida calls Uhtred a whore to the crown of Alfred. King Alfred asks Ragnar the Younger to try to find and save Uhtred. He tells Brida of his interest in her. Ælswith pushes back, as she refuses to have Uhtred guide her son, but Alfred again tells her to leave.
Brida wants to decapitate her, but Sigtryggr protects her.
Uhtred advises Alfred to fight for Wessex before the Danes can gather even more forces. Uhtred gives Skade to Haesten instead of Aethelflaed on condition that he retreats from the Abbey. Edward’s tried to find a solution for Mercia that respects them and keeps order, but events have turned against him. Uhtred defeats Bloodhair, but Ragnar stops Uhtred from killing him. They would need to surround him with men, with defences, and deny him what he needs to live. Æthelflæd sees Uhtred headed towards the monastery and expresses her displeasure with him accepting to be Lord of Mercia.
Beocca throws himself in from of the arrow, saves Young Uhtred and dies in the process. She puts out the fire, reasoning that Niflheim is much colder than they will ever be. One country, one king.
She leaves for Eoferwic with her army. Erik agrees to his terms and takes his brother and castrates his hand. Alfred tells Uhtred of Skade’s prediction of his imminent death. He tells her because he is loyal to Mercia and not Aethelred.
However, they don’t have the power to defend themselves against Edward. She will swear an oath that as long as she is Lady of Mercia, she will remain chaste. Uhtred and Halig are now rowers on a slave ship.
